Portobello Market, Edinburgh

Iryna’s Cakes at Portobello Market (Edinburgh)

📚 Estimated reading time: 4 to 5 minutes | Published: 2025-10-04 | Updated: 2025-10-15,

A table of colorful macarons and baked goods, labeled with tags, styled like an Elementor display under an “Iryna’s cakes” sign at a market stall.

Date & time: Saturday 6 September 2025, 09:30–13:30

Markets run the first Saturday of each month, except for January.

Occasionally, events may be cancelled due to weather conditions. A warning is issued at least four days in advance, so if you haven’t received one, we’ll be delighted to see you on the first Saturday.

Rating: ★★★★☆ 4.5/5.

A well‑run, seaside community market with lively footfall and a trader mix that complements bakery/dessert stalls like ours. We’ll be back.

What went well for us

  • Curated mix (farm produce + craft + bakes) meant a steady stream to our macarons after people grabbed coffee and bread.

  • Location is a winner: a green park right by the seaside and steps from the High Street’s cafes.

  • Dog‑friendly vibe keeps footfall family‑oriented and relaxed.

Getting there (for visitors)

  • On foot: Brighton Park sits just off Brighton Place; it’s 3–5 minutes from Portobello High Street.

  • By bus (Lothian): Services 21, 26, 49, 19 (and N26 overnight) stop within a short walk of Brighton Place/Brighton Park. Many visitors mentioned the 26 from Princes Street as the simplest city‑centre link.

  • By bike: The Promenade is a scenic approach; bike‑locking to railings/fences on the park edge is common (bring a good lock).

  • By car: Aim for Bridge Street or around Westbank Street/Powerleague if you must drive. Spaces fill early on bright mornings, so arriving before 10:00 helps. Watch local parking signs -restrictions vary by street.

Footfall & atmosphere

From a trader’s eye, it was busy and friendly all morning, with the peak between ~10:30 and noon.

We’d estimate several hundred visitors across the session, with lots of families, locals walking in from the High Street, and plenty of dog‑walkers (dogs are welcome).

One thing to improve

  • Parking clarity. For first‑timers, clearer day‑of signage would ease the last‑mile stress. That’s the only reason we’re not at a full 5★.

Traders we loved (September line‑up highlights)

  • Bakery Andante — textbook sourdough and buttery pastries; the morning queue told its own story.

  • Meadow Tea — loose‑leaf blends that pair perfectly with macarons; their Earl Grey & citrus notes were a hit with our lemon shells.

  • Jack and Fi — comfortingly chewy flapjacks; great mid‑market energy booster.

  • Greenslade Pottery — beautifully functional mugs and bowls; we spotted more than a few shoppers upgrading their home brew setup.

  • ASIGE — statement baskets and homeware; ideal for turning a market haul into a stylish hamper.

  • Mud and Marsh Jewellery & Plant on the Wall — thoughtful, handmade pieces with a local, nature‑inspired feel.

  • Smell the Melt Candle Company / Bonnie Glow: Scents of Scotland — scented candles that made our corner of the park smell like autumn already.

  • Rileys Coffee, Momentous Catering, Reekie’s Smokehouse — kept the crowd fuelled with excellent coffee, pakoras/samosas, and hot filled rolls.

  • Portobello Amnesty Local Group, Working for Wildlife, PEDAL — the community backbone; good conversations between shopping rounds.

(Plus lots more from the September list: Caurnie Soaperie, OOTSIE, RShand Woodcrafts, Michty, Literary Escape Pack, Craftybabs, Cute Cakes by Rachel, Blue Tag Creations, Sour Power Vinegars, That Tie Dye Place, and others.)

Quick tips for visitors

Bring a tote bag (or two), arrive before 11:00 for the best bakery choice, and plan a tea/coffee + treat combo (we’re biased—macarons + Earl Grey!). Dogs are part of the Porty charm; just be mindful around food stalls.
